When I press PTT for a longer period of time my radio cuts out my call. What is causing this?

Some of our business radios have a function called the Time Out Timer (TOT). The Time-Out Timer is a feature that automatically cuts off a transmission after a pre-set amount of time. The timer begins when you press the Push-to-Talk (PTT) button. If you hold the button down past the time limit, the radio will stop transmitting.

Normally, this function is turned on as standard. The TOT ensures that the frequency/channel is not congested by continual transmissions and frees up the channel for other users. Importantly this feature prevents "stuck mic" issues, conserves battery life and prevents overheating. Some radios will even enforce a penalty period, meaning the radio cannot transmit for a set amount of time after the TOT has activated – typically around 20 seconds. This can be adjusted and is programmable by your radio supplier/dealer to fit your needs and requirements. Some of our other radios, such as the IC-SAT100 have a 40-second PTT timer as this is the period that it takes for a satellite to move from in range to out of range (approx.). This is not programmable and is a set time.
