‘Jon’s in charge’ raises £250 for charity

A team of motorsport enthusiasts from radio communications company Icom (UK) Ltd have recently raised £250 for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust. The team raised this amount by competing in a sponsored two and a half-hour Endurance go-kart race. This event was held on December 4th 1999 at the Bayford Meadow go-kart track situated near Sittingbourne in Kent.

The team, which was named ‘Jon’s in charge’ was made up of team captain Jon Brooks (Marine Product Specialist) and fellow drivers Mark Jarvis (Amateur Product Specialist, Barry ‘Billy’ Vane (Commercial Dealer Manager) and Bob Stockley (Sales & Marketing Director).

The Endurance race, organised by the trust, began at 11am on a very cold winter’s morning and lasted for just over two and a half-hours. The freezing conditions were made less inhospitable by the friendliness of the competing teams. Jon Brooks remarked, ‘There was a nice atmosphere, everyone was involved in a lot of light-hearted banter.’

Out of 8 competing teams, the Icom team finished in 5th place. However the aim of the day, for all parties, was to make sure that a lot of money would be raised for the trust. Jon Brooks was not too disheartened about his team’s performance and philosophically said, ‘We are all motor sport enthusiasts and it is really nice that we could use our hobby to do some good in raising money for such a worthy charity.’

However his team-mate Mark Jarvis felt that their finishing position could have been improved. He wickedly remarked, ‘The weak link in our team was Barry Vane, who spent more time going sideways than going forwards. This style of driving doesn’t surprise me at all. After all, he does drive a Vauxhall Vectra’!
