Icom Aid Forces Against Cancer
Icom (UK) Ltd has recently given support to a unique and very demanding challenge to raise money for two cancer charities. The challenge called Forces Against Cancer involved eight police officers from the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and the Ministry of Defence Police walking to the summit of 10 mountains in the UK and Ireland in just 5 days. Icom supported the challenge with three IC-F3S transceivers, which allowed the walkers to keep in touch with their support vehicle. The challenge saw the team complete all 10 peaks Pen Y Fan, Snowdon, Scafell Pike, Blencathra, White Comb, Ben Nevis, Slieve Donard, Slieve Commedagh, Mangerton Mountain and Carrauntoohill. The total time taken was 113 hours 15 minutes. This included travelling 2000 miles on the road, two ferry crossings (to and from Ireland), and the time taken to complete each peak. The team has raised £27,000.00 to date with an estimated final figure around £30,000.00. This fantastic amount will be split between Cancer and Leukemia In Chidren (CLIC) and Cancer Research UK. Simon Costin, Project Coordinator, for Forces Against Cancer said, ’As a former Royal Marine Commando radio operator I would recommend Icom to anyone looking for reliability. Without question the Forces Against Cancer team would be looking to Icom UK Ltd again for support in future ventures.’ He further added, ’Clearly it was critical that the team maintained a safety line throughout the challenge. We achieved this by the use of the excellent radio equipment. But leaving safety aside, the tight time frame required near perfect logistics. We achieved this by radioing ahead to our support vehicle ensuring that everything was ready for our return. I have only praise for the reliability offered by the radio equipment.’ Icom UK Marketing - marketing@icomuk.co.uk15/08/2002
