Icom Announce Digital Two Way Radio dPMR Mode 3 System Products at PMR Summit

Icom Inc. together with Fylde Micro Ltd recently showcased a dPMR Mode 3 system at the influential PMR Summit in Barcelona, Spain. The system consists of Icom’s dPMR Mode 3 IDAS terminals and repeaters and Fylde Micro’s 4th generation controller, MultiLingo. The combined product is ground breaking, based on the open ETSI TS 102 658 Tier 2 Mode 3 dPMR standards. It will currently be the first trunking and networking capable system to be based on ETSI digital two-way radio standards outside of Tetra.

The partnership to develop Mode 3 dPMR equipment was announced in January of this year, and the results of the development have progressed to the point where the first dPMR Mode 3 products are being displayed. The initial system will be a trunked and networked radio system with the capability of ranging in size from a single site up to 16 site multi-site trunking operation. Further enhancements planned for next year will see the system scope expand to an unlimited number of sites (theoretically a maximum of up to 1000 sites/500,000 subscribers) with telephone interconnect and other features.

The Icom/Fylde solution will be unique in that it will offer an immediate migration path from MPT to dPMR without the requirement of any MPT operation in the IDAS terminals. The MultiLingo controller will have the capability to encode/decode analogue MPT signals to and from digital dPMR terminals. So providing the advantage of not requiring a parallel infrastructure set up to allow an MPT and the dPMR digital system to work together.
