Icom UK Radio Donation Enhances Operations for WPNSA Sailing Events
The Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) has received a helpful donation from Icom UK to enhance its operational capabilities. The equipment, an Icom IC-M510EVO fixed VHF/DSC Marine radio and an HM-195GB Commandmic has been installed on the academy's main committee boat, ‘Gyrinus’. This donation will contribute to the Academy continuing its high standards for communication and safety during sailing events.
The
WPNSA is a not-for-profit company dedicated to running world-class sailing events and supporting the development of the sport. As a crucial pillar of the local community, the Academy plays a significant role in bringing tourism and economic activity to the area. It is also the official training base for the British Sailing Team and the British Sailing Squad.
‘Gyrinus’, the committee boat receiving the new equipment has its own rich history. Originally purchased by LOCOG for the London 2012 Olympics, it was acquired by the WPNSA several years ago. The new
IC-M510EVO radio is situated in the main cabin for the boat's driver while the
HM-195GB Commandmic is located on the top deck, where the race officer is situated. The dual setup allows for seamless communication and control, enabling the race officer to change channels and manage communications efficiently.
According to Sally Reynoldson, the Senior Operations and Sailing Manager at WPNSA, the donation is "extremely helpful and gratefully received." She explained that as a not-for-profit organisation, the support from Icom is invaluable, with Sally adding, "even to get that radio and Commandmic provided to us, is just an amazing generous gesture.”
The relationship between WPNSA and Icom is a great one. "Just because it's a quality reliable brand and it's a longstanding relationship," Sally stated when asked about why the academy chooses Icom products. She also praised Icom’s support team, noting their rapid and efficient handling of service work and questions.
The donation reinforces Icom's long-standing relationship with the WPNSA, built on a shared commitment to quality and safety in sailing. The new radio will be an essential tool for the academy, allowing race officers to communicate clearly with safety boats and competitors—a critical function for managing major events like the recent Waszp Games and future championships.
