Icom’s 50th Anniversary IC-7850
The first consignment of the special 50th Anniversary IC-7850 arrived in the UK recently. This limited edition, hand built transceiver was made in very limited numbers to commemorate Icom's 50th anniversary. All were pre sold to a lucky and very exclusive few. With its distinctive gold accents and a commemorative panel signed by Mr Inoue himself, only 150 IC-7850 have been built for the global market and all are numbered to certify authenticity. Dave Stockley, founder and chairman of Icom UK is one of the lucky few to own a IC-7850 having traded up from his well loved IC-7800, look out for a review on Dave’s own personal radio in the near future, The radio features include an optimized roofing filter, new local oscillator (LO) design, improved phase noise and enhanced spectrum scope. Other features to improve HF operation include a 1.2kHz optimized roofing filter that improves in-band adjacent signal performance. For the transceiver's Local Oscillator (LO), Icom has broken with tradition and employed a Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) along with the Phase Locked Oscillator. This new LO design sets a new touchstone for phase noise with -150dBc/Hz at 10kHz offset (and -140dBc/Hz at 1kHz offset). The IC-7850 also features a high-resolution spectrum waterfall function as well as an enhanced spectrum scope that can be operated with PC mouse via a USB port. A dual scope function shows simultaneous activity in both bands which is convenient when searching a sub-band and maintaining a run frequency on the main band.
