Why distress messages are mandatory in DSC (Digital Selective Calling)?
All distress communications whether radio, DSC, or satellite must be conducted according to GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) guidelines. GMDSS is an interactive communication network that has been designed to ensure safety of navigation for seafarers and ensure that vessels in distress obtain help without delay.
Under these and ITU (International Telecommunication Union) regulations, the three levels of emergency; distress, urgency and safety , better known in VHF radio terms as Mayday, Pan Pan and Securite must be understood by all radio operators and therefore are regulated for the protection of all.
