Can anyone use a VHF radio?

To operate a ships VHF radio you must hold a valid operator certificate or be monitored by someone who does. The only exception is in a distress situation. All crew should know how to put out a distress call either by DSC or by voice. The RYA runs a one-day Marine Radio Short Range Certificate course. This provides you with the necessary paperwork to operate a Marine VHF with DSC capabilities.

Do I need any other paperwork?
As well as the operator licence the vessel needs to be licensed. The ships licence’s comes with your vessel’s callsign and Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number.
