Herne Bay Duo In Chain Churning Challenge To Raise Money for Ponseti Clinic

Lee Harris, who works in our Purchasing Department will be setting his sights on achieving a mammoth cycle ride to raise much needed money for the Ponseti Clinic in Margate, Kent. The ride, which will start on May 20th 2008, will cover over 420 miles of the rolling English countryside. Starting from Lands End, Cornwall, Lee accompanied by this brother in law Jamie and a small support team anticipate arriving on Herne Bay seafront on May 24th 2008 to a hero's welcome.

The Ponseti Clinic based at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother hospital in Margate treats babies and children born with Talipes also known as Clubfoot. The treatment is essential to allow as many of these children to lead a normal life. The Ponseti treatment is by far, the kindest method of treatment but unfortunately is very expensive. At this time the Q. E. Q. M. Hospital does not have the funding to provide the best equipment available, which is resulting in many babies suffering from relapses.

The team decided to raise money for the Ponseti Clinic because, in April 2007, Lee's nephew, Ruben was born with Talipes. Lee said,' Until then, I had never heard of Talipes. Ruben has had to endure a lot of treatment to reshape his feet. After a relapse, his feet had to be stretched and recast in plaster yet again… which has been really difficult for us to watch. Seeing the wonders the staff, led by consultant Mark Cornell, are performing in the clinic made us want to raise money and awareness of the condition. The suggestion by a friend to do a cycle ride from Lands End was only made in November so preparations for this challenge have been made extremely quickly.'

Lee said, 'It will be a solid 5 days of effort. We anticipate riding up to 9 hours a day to cover the 420 miles on this challenge. Our greatest problems will be avoiding reckless drivers; combating cramp and dehydration. Our training so far has gone really well with lots of distance work to build up our endurance. It will be hard but if we achieve our target of £20,000 we can be well satisfied.'

Bob Stockley, Sales & Marketing Director of Icom said, 'Everybody at Icom UK are all behind Lee and we wish him and the rest of the team every success and hope they reach their goal of raising £20,000 for the Clinic.'
