I have poor reception on my Airband radio. What can I do?

You could look at the following.

Are there other aircraft in between you and the tower? How about buildings? AM radio is notoriously poor when on the ground, and the signals do not propagate very well. When in the air, it is much better, especially when the pilot connects the radio to an external antenna. A metal aircraft tends to block the RF from the antenna when inside the cabin, but when using an external antenna, you give the RF a clear path to and from the station and provide the radio a good ground plane by using the fuselage as that ground plane.
