Icom Aid Forces Against Cancer

Icom (UK) Ltd is to give support to a unique and very demanding challenge to raise money for three cancer charities. The challenge called Forces Against Cancer will involve 10 officers from the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and the Ministry of Defence Police kayaking the 10 largest lochs in Scotland, around 200 miles in just 5 days. The team announced the project on 9th January 2004 on Icom UK’s stand at the Schroders London Boat Show 2004.

The challenge has gained a wide amount of support from the marine industry. Icom UK are supplying radio equipment and technical support. The major marine distributor SM Group Europe will provide GPS equipment, and Perception Kayaks, Yak, and Nookie will be providing the Kayaks and Clothing. This venture is the successor to the record breaking '10 Peak Mountain Challenge' undertaken. The challenge saw the team complete all 10 peaks; Pen Y Fan, Snowdon, Scafell Pike, Blencathra, White Comb, Ben Nevis, Slieve Donard, Slieve Commedagh, Mangerton Mountain and Carrauntoohill in only five days. The total time taken was 113 hours 15 minutes. This time included travelling 2000 miles on the road, two ferry crossings (to and from Ireland), and the time taken to complete each peak. The team’s motivation for these challenges is to raise money for Cancer Research UK, Challenging Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood (CLIC), and The Chestnut Appeal. Having raised £33,000.00 in 2002 the aim is to raise more in 2004.

Simon Costin, Project Co-ordinator for Forces Against Cancer said, ’we are really glad that we have Icom UK on board with this latest challenge. It is critical that the team maintains a safety line throughout the challenge. Our experience in the previous challenge showed that. We can achieve this by the use of their excellent radio equipment.’ Simon Costin can be contacted on 07919 000810 or e-mailed on simon@costin2765.freeserve.co.uk.
