Icom Radios Used to Promote Safety at Sea Message

This year at the Southampton Boatshow the RNLI were actively promoting the message of Sea Safety. Two Icom VHF/DSC radios were installed on its stand as part of its remit to provide free advice to boatowners.

Keith Colwell, Sea Safety Co-ordinator for Wessex said, ‘ A lot of people are still not comfortable with DSC even after completing their VHF/SRC courses. These radios have provided customers with an opportunity to do a little refresher and to ask our staff pertinent questions that they may have about VHF/DSC protocol.

Keith said, ‘ Keith said, ‘ It was great having the Icom IC-M601 and the Icom-MC421 hard wired on the stand since it allowed owners and crew to see the ease and speed of using DSC without raising a false alarm.’

As well as giving general advice on Sea Safety, the RNLI staff handed out a free interactive CD with lots of practical advice about being Safe at Sea. The comprehensive CD is aimed at a wide audience who owns Sail Boats, dinghies, Sportsboat’s, PWC’s, motorboats and RIBS.

Jon Brooks, Marine Dealer Manager of Icom (UK) Ltd said,’ As a radio manufacturer we are fully behind the work that the RNLI is doing in promoting the message of good safety practice at sea. We are of course pleased to see that our units are playing a positive and educative role on the stand.’
