Is there an alternative to using a VHF for boat comms?

To communicate effectively with other vessels or the Coast Guard in an emergency, it is essential to have a high-quality marine VHF radio. Walkie-talkies are a great short-range communication device but they are not designed for communication/safety at sea, you would not be able to use them to hail another vessel for assistance.
