Icom respond to growing catastrophe

In response to the growing catastrophe in Mozambique, radio communication company, Icom UK Ltd have supplied the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) with a consignment of eight IC-A3E VHF Airband handheld radios which are going to be used as an important communication link within the relief package that is being organised.

The radios supplied to the RNLI will allow their volunteers to work in close conjunction with the South African Airforce allowing them to communicate with their own fleet of helicopters.

Icom UK Ltd supplied the RNLI at short notice with the consignment, which left Kent International Airport (ex RAF Manston) on Friday March 3rd at 4.00pm. Included with the radio communication equipment were transport boats as well as key personnel trained for such catastrophes.

Although the water levels are receding, conditions in Mozambique are still very difficult. Icom catered for these demanding conditions by providing the RNLI with a waterproof jacket and spare battery for each radio as part of the package. Charging was also a major operational concern for the radios so Barry Vane, Commercial Dealer Manager of Icom (UK) Ltd suggested that the RNLI take cigarette lighter leads allowing the RNLI to charge their radios from vehicles or from any other source.

Icom’s IC-A3E radio, used in this high-profile operation, is a simple-to-use, VHF Airband transceiver. Compact in size, the handportable has easy to hear superior audio, even without a headset! The model is one of the latest in a range of radio products that Icom UK Ltd has been distributing for the last 25 years.

Remarking about Icom's response, Brian Faulkner, Communication Support Manager of the RNLI said, 'Icom was our choice for help with COMMS equipment bearing in mind there ability to meet our needs at short notice. We have dealt with Icom in the past and we were aware of their extensive range of products.' He further added, ' I would like to thank Barry Vane for being very helpful and congratulate Icom UK Ltd for the quick way they have responded to this urgent situation.'

Ian Lockyer, Marketing Executive for Icom UK Ltd said, 'We have all been distressed with the harrowing images that have been coming out of Mozambique. Everyone at Icom UK Ltd wishes all the volunteers success and safety in what will be testing circumstances.”
