Safety At Sea: Why Smartphones Are No Substitute for Marine VHF Radio

In an era where smartphones keep us connected almost anywhere on land, it is easy to assume they can serve as a dependable safety device on the water. However, when heading out to sea - whether sailing, cruising or paddleboarding, relying solely on a mobile phone for marine communication is a serious risk.

While smartphones are invaluable tools in everyday life, they are fundamentally unsuited for the marine environment. Here’s why marine VHF radios remain the most reliable choice:

Safety At Sea: Why Smartphones Are No Substitute for Marine VHF Radio

Network Coverage Ends Where the Coastline Begins

Mobile phones rely on cellular towers situated on land, meaning that once you travel out to sea, mobile signal drops. Coverage can fade quickly just a short distance offshore, leaving you completely cut off. In contrast, a marine VHF radio operates on dedicated VHF frequencies via direct line-of-sight. Fixed-mount units benefit from high-mounted mast antennas to maximise reach, while portable handhelds provide the flexibility of line-of-sight communication from anywhere, making them independent of network infrastructure, commercial masts or data coverage.

Group Alerts vs. One-to-One Calls

If you encounter an emergency using a smartphone, when you call 999 you are limited to speaking with a single call handler at a time. A marine VHF radio broadcasts on Channel 16, meaning your distress call is heard simultaneously by the Coastguard and other vessels closest to you, providing the immediate assistance of nearby boats ahead of the official rescue team.

HM Coastguard Broadcasts & Weather Warnings

In the UK, Maritime Safety Information (MSI) and severe weather warnings are verbally broadcasted by the Coastguard on VHF Channels 62, 63, 64 and 10 (preceded by an announcement on Channel 16). This information is broadcast exclusively via marine VHF and therefore would not be intercepted by a mobile phone.

Life Saving DSC

All current Icom fixed-mount marine radios include Digital Selective Calling (DSC) with the IC-M94DE handheld also equipped with the feature. DSC is an automated digital messaging and calling system that allows boats and coast stations to ‘direct dial’ each other without needing to constantly monitor a speaker. It instantly transmits your exact GPS location, vessel identity and nature of distress to rescue authorities and nearby boats with a single press of a button.

Built for the Environment

Smartphones are usually made with glass touchscreens that can easily shatter if dropped. Most modern handsets also offer some degree of water resistance, but they are not designed to withstand being dropped into water or enduring heavy rain. Saltwater corrosion, extreme temperatures or a hard knock would easily compromise a standard phone. Marine VHF radios are specifically engineered to cope with harsh maritime conditions. They are robust, ergonomic, highly waterproof (often meeting stringent IPX7 or IPX8 standards) and designed to be operated easily with wet hands or gloves. Some Icom marine radios also come with features designed to improve safety at sea, such as Float ‘n Flash, AquaQuake™ and Dualwatch /Tri-Watch.

Battery Reliability

A smartphone running navigation apps, tracking tools and display lights will use battery power rapidly, especially when struggling to maintain a weak cellular signal offshore. For small boat sailors, paddleboarders or kayakers where no charging facilities are available, your lifeline is gone once your smartphone battery dies. Icom Marine VHF radios are built for power efficiency, offering long standby times and reliable battery performance (up to 14 hours). Furthermore, fixed-mount VHF systems are wired directly into the vessel’s main power supply, ensuring continuous availability.

A smartphone is a great secondary tool for checking local weather forecasts or making calls before leaving the shore, but when out on the water, it’s no substitute for purpose-built marine radio. Investing in a reliable marine VHF radio ensures you stay connected, visible and safe every time.
