What is HF Email?

HF email is the method of using HF frequencies to send data transmissions. One of the most obvious benefits is that, being a wireless system, it is possible to utilise this method in environments where normal telephone-line based E-mail systems cannot be used. (E.g. the middle of the ocean, remote jungle or desert areas, countries where the Internet is still in the developing stage).

Whilst satellite based systems may offer more advanced and higher data transfer speeds, the major drawback is the cost. An HF/SSB marine E-mail system is far more cost efficient. As one of the major items needed is an SSB transceiver, which a lot yacht owners will have anyway, the initial outlay can be significantly minimised.

It is necessary to have a contract with a provider, but this is not much different to setting up an E-mail system in your office. The software for this system is almost identical to standard Microsoft Outlook systems and thus is user-friendly or familiar.

To set up an HF E-mail system, the following equipment is necessary: Radio transceiver, antenna, radio modem, computer, cables and software.
