Icom LTE Handsets To Support Communications For 68th Round The Island Race

Established in 1959, the Isle of Sheppey (IOS) Round the Island Race is Europe's longest annual endurance event for dinghies, catamarans, and sailboards. The 68th edition of this intense 40-mile clockwise challenge is set for Sunday 13th September 2026, preceded by a ‘round the cans’ warm-up race on Saturday.

To ensure seamless coordination, race officials will use Icom IP503H LTE/PoC handsets. In past years, traditional VHF radios struggled with the island's challenging landscape, where cliffs often obstructed line-of-sight signals.

"Previously we have struggled with VHF range and cliff interference," said Russell Wheeler, Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club (IOSSC) Treasurer. "Relay stations didn't always bridge the gap, which left safety crews and competitors vulnerable. Following a successful trial earlier this year, we are excited to switch to Icom LTE/PoC handsets to ensure a safer, smoother weekend of sailing."
