Icom, Proud to support the friendly Ramsgate Week Regatta for over a DecadeRamsgate Week is widely recognised as the friendly regatta and normally attracts approximately 100 boats from Great Britain and the continent. The annual event that is run by the Royal Temple Yacht Club is organised by a management team that heads a large group of experienced volunteers to ensure that everything that happens on and offshore runs smoothly. It is so important to have good, reliable radio equipment…that is why Icom has been closely associated with the event and been a sponsor of the event for the past decade. Icom have supported Ramsgate Week in many ways with a mixture of equipment support, competitions prizes and the branding of the now famous Icom Buoy which sits off the Goodwin Sands. The Icom marine VHF radios used to support the event are used as a primary means of communication for the race management team, race control and safety fleet. Icom handhelds are used by officials to oversee events both on and off the water and are also used to respond quickly and efficiently to any emergencies that may arise. Stuart Carter, Royal Temple Yacht Club Race Officer said, ‘For the last few years, racing has started from the Royal Temple Yacht Club Race Hut situated on the top of the building at the end of the east pier which also houses the Brasserie and Port Control. Port bylaws require all vessels to be able to communicate with Port Control and so it was deemed much more convenient for the Race officers to use VHF to start and administer the races of all classes rather than resort to code flags. Icom is always used as the radio of choice because of their reliability and clarity.’ Peter Holland, Inshore Race Officer and Broadstairs Sailing Club Race Officer said, ‘During Ramsgate week, Icom radios are in constant use to communicate with the fleets throughout the race. Broadstairs Sailing Club, who are integral to Ramsgate Week, use VHF radios to communicate with safety boats, beach staff and the clubhouse.’ He added, ‘Icom radios are ideal as they are easy to use, lightweight and suited for purpose in the harsh marine environment. In addition to the eight-club handheld radios, our three safety boats are fitted with Icom’s. Also, many of the clubs Race Officers and safety personnel have Icom hand-held radios.' Ian Lockyer, Marketing Manager of Icom UK said,’ Icom are delighted to be involved and associated with Ramsgate Week, the second largest international regatta in the UK. With a dynamic organising committee, the event goes from strength to strength each year. Here’s looking forward to some great racing in 2021.’ For more details about this great event, please go to www.ramsgateweek.com.
