Ships certified as SOLAS vessels need to have radios that meet the strict international radio safety standards known as the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Merchant ships registered under the European Union must have radios that comply with the EU Marine Equipment Directive (MED) which can be identified with a “Wheel Mark”. GMDSS Class A VHF and MF/HF equipment are an important requirement for vessels, giving ship owners more communication options. Icom supplies a full VHF and MF/HF solution that meets ITU Class A DSC requirements and European MED 96/98/EC “Wheel Mark” approval for European merchant ships. This short video gives an overview about them.
